CrossFit is an intense and challenging workout that targets the whole body and builds all aspects of physical fitness, including mobility and cardiovascular health. Each workout takes only 5 to 15 minutes but in that time requires the athlete to be in almost constant motion. Participants in the program usually do these workouts three to five days each week, either independently or at an affiliate location.

The intensity of the workout means that the athlete can gain significant benefit in a short amount of time. Variety means that he or she can more easily stay motivated and avoid boredom, and those who work out at gyms, or “boxes,” can draw on the motivation of others. Because CrossFit dictates the routine that participants will perform on a particular day, the box is a space of shared effort and helps everyone to build community.

CrossFit boxes also allow people to participate in classes led by a qualified coach, who offers support for strong technique. This in turn enables those involved to gain the maximum benefit from each exercise and thus from the program overall.

Last August, the American Dental Association (ADA) released a statement informing the public of the ways in which dentists prevent the spread of infection and keep patients safe. All dental practitioners are required by law to adhere to guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which were recently updated in a document titled “CDC Summary of Infection Prevention Practices in Dental Settings: Basic Expectations for Safe Care.” This guidance spells out in great detail the things that dentists, technicians, and other staff must do to keep their offices sanitary.

Best practices include cleaning and sanitizing all surfaces in an examination room before a patient enters, or covering equipment with plastic and then replacing the plastic each time a new patient comes in. Disposable tools are discarded in safe containers after each use, and all non-disposable tools are cleaned and sterilized before they are used again. Through these practices and others, dentists commit daily to keeping their offices infection-free.

Pleasant to watch and relatively straightforward to keep, tropical fish stand out as an ideal choice for the beginning pet owner. The most challenging part is setting up the tank, as it requires the owner to gather the correct supplies and establish an aquatic environment with the correct pH level and temperature for the chosen fish species.

Most freshwater fish require water that is 72-78 degrees F and well-lit during the day. The water should be aerated and equipped with a good filtration system, which a pet store can help the beginning owner to set up. It takes some time for the ecosystem of the tank to come into balance, so it’s important to keep the tank at half capacity or lower during the first few days.

In most cases, the capacity of a tank should be one gallon of water per lengthwise inch of fish. The tropical fish-keeper will want a 20- to 50-gallon tank for multiple fish, depending on the species and size of the fish.

All tanks need weekly cleaning, which involves siphoning debris that accumulates at the bottom. A weekly water change should involve two to three gallons, and the new water should be warm enough to maintain the tank temperature. One should also change the filter equipment weekly, according to package instructions.

Finally, owners must be careful to feed fish correctly. A good rule of thumb is that the fish should receive enough to eat in two minutes. It is easier to compensate for underfeeding than overfeeding, as the owner can easily add food to the tank.
